Utah Mining and Processing Industry Collaborative Minerals The metals industry is important to Utahs economy and the needs and interests of Utahs metals industry intersect significantly with the visions and roadmaps the steel, metal casting and aluminum industries have developed with the Department of Energys Office of Industrial Technologies. The fit is so good that in 2000 we launched the Utah Mining and Processing Industry Collaborative Minerals (UMPIC) with support from ITP and the State of Utah. The University of Utah Engineering Experiment Station leads the collaborative. The collaborative with its partners will work with the mining, metals and processing industries to enhance waste minimization, energy efficiency, process productivity, and competitiveness. More . . .
Utahs Metals Industry contributed 616 million to the states economy and includes primary production of copper, magnesium, steel and zirconium as well as gold refining. Utah has iron, steel, aluminum and copper foundries, an aluminum extrusion plant, copper and aluminum wire plants, metal heat-treating and coating facilities as well as numerous metals fabrication plants.
Fabricated metals products contributes another 381 million to the economy and includes products ranging from: metal bar grating; custom sheet metal assemblies for the aircraft, computer and government industries; welding for the aerospace industry galvanized steel highway safety guardrails and end treatments; sheet metal pipe piling, sign posts and bridge railings; high-strength bolts, nuts, screws and precision components; firearms and archery equipment to custom recognition and achievement awards made from precious metals and stones.
The primary metals industry includes magnesium and copper produced from Utah ores. Steel and zirconium are produced from imported ores and the gold refining operation handles gold produced world wide including Utah gold.
Steel production includes hot-rolled steel plate, slabs, sheet, pipe, structural components and specialty products (joists, grinding balls, drainage systems
)
Other industries include rolling, drawing and extruding of copper and aluminum; manufacture of aluminum and copper electrical wire and cable: soft-alloy aluminum extrusion for transportation, service, building, construction, consumer durables and television cable markets; steel and aluminum investment castings.
Six of Utahs largest industries with over $500 million in annual sales - are metals businesses. More . . .
